AWS for improved IT infrastructure availability for a leading energy and gas provider
Microland improved application availability and performance by migrating and optimizing workloads on cloud for a leading energy and gas provider in the UK
Microland’s assessment of the client’s application landscape followed a 2-step Cloud Migration:
Step 1: Lift-and-shift legacy applications to AWS
Step 2: Re-platform the environment to host other applications
- 10% improvement in availability of IT infrastructure
- 40% faster application performance
- 25% reduction in cost of cloud operations
Client
The client is responsible for distributing gas to homes and businesses across the UK and is one of eight gas distribution networks in the UK having a customer base of more than 2.6 million.
Business Goal
The client wanted to adopt cloud but lacked the processes to migrate and manage workloads deployed in cloud. The problem with achieving the cloud vision lay in the client’s inability to manage a Hybrid IT environment and the lack of cloud native skills to enable end users to launch instances.
Microland Solution
Microland assessed the client’s portfolio and examined the workloads for best fit cloud and migration techniques. Legacy applications like SCADA and Forecaster were migrated to AWS using a lift-and-shift approach. This was followed by introducing the use of load balancers to optimize the cloud operations, configuring multiple Virtual Private Clouds, creating Amazon Machine Images (AMI) and launching instances. Microland also enabled single window infrastructure monitoring of all 64 client machines on cloud and implemented high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) for SCADA application.
Business Outcomes
Microland’s expertise in cloud migrations and cloud environment management led to:
- 10% improvement in availability of IT infra in line with regulatory requirements
- 40% faster application performance
- 25% reduction in cost of cloud operations
- Single window pane to manage all cloud instances
